The Circuit Court in Tarkwa, presided over by Her Honour Bernice Mensimah Akoh, has remanded three persons into custody for their alleged involvement in a vehicle theft syndicate operating in the area.
The accused persons are Kojo Amponsah, also known as “Kamakazi” (A1), 35, a driver; Emmanuel Appiah, alias “Taller” (A2), 35, a plumber; and Tanko Bashiru (A3), 33, a miner. They are said to have acted together with one Isaac Duku (A4), now deceased.
The accused persons are facing charges of conspiracy to commit crime, unlawful entry, and stealing. No plea was taken, and the case has been adjourned to April 9, 2026.
Presenting the facts before the court, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Samuel Ahiabo, prosecuting, said the complainant, Isaac Bochulichago Apuri, is a miner with AECI Explosives Company Limited and resides at New Atuabo in Tarkwa.
According to the prosecution, on November 8, 2025, at about 7:40 a.m., the complainant reported the theft of a white Toyota Land Cruiser pick-up vehicle with registration number GT 2036-25 and chassis number JTE88711408077246, valued at $55,000, equivalent to GH¢600,205.45. The vehicle, belonging to AECI Explosives Company Limited, had been assigned to him for official use.
ASP Ahiabo stated that the complainant had parked the vehicle at his residence between 9:00 p.m. and 10:00 p.m. on November 7, 2025. However, upon waking up at about 5:30 a.m. the following day, he discovered that the vehicle had been stolen.
Police subsequently visited the scene and gathered evidence to aid investigations.
The prosecution further disclosed that on February 22, 2026, the accused persons were arrested through an intelligence-led operation in connection with a similar offence at their hideouts in Kumasi. During interrogation, they allegedly admitted to committing the Tarkwa vehicle theft.
Investigations revealed that the deceased suspect, Isaac Duku, was the leader of the group and had stayed in Tarkwa for about four days prior to the incident to conduct surveillance on the target and plan the operation.
On November 7, 2025, the three accused persons reportedly joined him in Tarkwa. Later that night, they moved to the complainant’s residence, where Duku allegedly used a gas cylinder and cutter to break into the vehicle while the others acted as lookouts.
The accused persons are said to have led police to the crime scene at New Atuabo, where each pointed out their respective roles during the operation.
Police investigations further revealed that the group removed the vehicle’s tracking system at a location near Samahu, close to Tarkwa, before disposing of the vehicle.
According to the prosecution, proceeds from the sale of the vehicle were shared among the accused, with A1 and A2 receiving GH¢3,000 each, while A3 received GH¢12,000.
Further investigations indicated that the accused persons are part of a larger car-stealing syndicate believed to be responsible for several vehicle thefts across the country, particularly in Tarkwa.
The prosecution added that the deceased suspect, identified as the leader, allegedly sold the stolen vehicles in Techiman to an unidentified buyer, who is believed to transport them to Burkina Faso.
The case has been adjourned to April 9, 2026, for further proceedings.
