Tamale City FC opened their 2026/27 UMB Division One League campaign with a 1-0 win over city rivals Northern City FC at the Aliu Mahama Sports Stadium on Saturday.
The match remained goalless until the 73rd minute, when substitute Richard Barko gave Tamale City the lead from the penalty spot.
Northern City pressed for an equaliser, but Tamale City defended their advantage to claim all three points in the local derby.
Former Premier League side Real Tamale United FC started their campaign with a 1-1 draw against Sankara Nationals at the Yendi Youth Resource Centre.
After a goalless opening half, Emmanuel Owusu put Real Tamale United ahead in the 50th minute.
Sankara Nationals responded in the 73rd minute, with Hafiz Bawa producing a fine finish to bring the scores level. RTU could not find a second goal, leaving the two sides to share the points.
At the Ohene Ameyaw Park on Sunday, former Premier League side Techiman Eleven Wonders were held to a goalless draw by Wamanafo Mighty Royals.
Eleven Wonders created a number of promising chances but failed to convert them, as neither team managed to break the deadlock.
