Ghanaian duo Caleb Yirenkyi and Brandon Thomas-Asante featured for Coventry City on Saturday as the club triumphed over Nottingham Forest to secure their first Premier League victory after five matches into the season.
Yirenkyi, who joined Coventry City in the summer, started and remained on the pitch until the 90th minute before being replaced as Coventry managed the closing stages of the encounter, while his compatriot, Thomas-Asante, lasted the entire duration of the match.
The first half of the match ended in a pulsating goalless draw, as both teams struggled to find the back of the net despite creating numerous scoring opportunities.
The pair impressed in the high-stakes clash held at the City Ground as Coventry cruised to a narrow victory to merit the three maximum points. The win marks the club’s first Premier League win in 25 years.
Wales international Jay Dasilva emerged as the hero after scoring the decisive goal in the 55th minute, firing Coventry into the lead and ultimately securing all three points for Frank Lampard’s side.
Before this match, Coventry City, who secured promotion to the top flight this season, had suffered four straight defeats.
The result will provide a major boost for Coventry as they begin their fight to establish themselves in the Premier League.
Yirenkyi’s performance comes at an important time for the midfielder, who has earned a place in Carlos Queiroz’s latest Ghana squad for the upcoming 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.
Thomas-Asante, however, was not included in the Black Stars squad for the upcoming qualifiers despite featuring prominently for Coventry and completing the full 90 minutes against Nottingham Forest.
Ghana will take on Ivory Coast in a high-stakes clash away from home on September 24 before taking on The Gambia at the Accra Sports Stadium on September 29. The Black Stars will wrap up this international break with a friendly against Morocco.
