Eastern Region edge Volta as Ashanti finish Matchday Four in style

Defending champions Eastern Region began Matchday Four of the MTN Elite U-19 Championship with a 3-1 win over Volta Region, while Ashanti Region completed the round of Group A fixtures with a 2-0 victory against Western Region.

Eastern Region made the stronger start in Saturday’s opening Group A game at the Ghanaman Soccer Centre of Excellence in Prampram and took the lead after 10 minutes. Ransford Siaw provided the early breakthrough, finishing clinically to put the holders in front.

Volta Region responded before half-time and succeeded in restoring parity in the 37th minute. Samuel Maja scored to level the contest, ensuring the teams went into the interval with the match evenly balanced.

The defending champions regained control 12 minutes after the restart. Inusah Alhassan found the net in the 57th minute to put Eastern Region back in front and give them renewed momentum.

Eastern continued to push for a third goal rather than settle for their narrow advantage. Their pressure paid off seven minutes later, when Samuel Zakaria scored in the 64th minute to extend the lead and effectively secure all three points.

Alhassan was recognised as the Man of the Match after his influential contribution to Eastern Region’s performance. His goal helped restore the champions’ advantage, while his overall display played a significant part in their victory.

Ashanti Region ended the day’s Group A programme with a confident 2-0 success over Western Region at the GFA Technical Hub.

The second game remained goalless throughout the first half, but Ashanti broke the deadlock six minutes after the interval. Oscar Frimpong struck in the 51st minute to give his side the advantage after a contest in which Ashanti had looked deserving of taking the lead.

Ashanti maintained control of the game and eventually made sure of the result in the 82nd minute. Mohammed Dayvon scored the second goal, completing a victory that earned Ashanti Region all three points.

Frimpong was named the Most Valuable Player after an impressive individual display. His goal was central to Ashanti’s commanding performance against Western Region.

The two results brought Matchday Four in Group A to a close, with Eastern Region and Ashanti Region both recording victories. Eastern’s result came in a high-scoring contest against Volta, while Ashanti secured their points through a clean-sheet win over Western.

The MTN Elite U-19 Championship continues to provide a competitive setting for some of Ghana’s most promising young players. The tournament is intended to help them develop their technical and tactical abilities, while also giving them valuable experience in competitive matches that can contribute to their progress and future careers.
