Black Queens head coach Kim Lars Bjorkegren says Ghana have achieved one of their major objectives for the summer after securing a place in the quarterfinals of the 2026 TotalEnergies Women's Africa Cup of Nations.
The Swedish coach expressed his delight after Ghana's draw with Mali sealed qualification to the knockout stage, revealing that reaching the last eight had been one of three key targets set before the tournament.
"To go to the playoff was one of our three targets that we are having this summer with the Black Queens," Björkegren said after the match.
Despite celebrating qualification, the coach admitted he was disappointed his side failed to put the game beyond Mali after dominating large spells of the contest.
"The only thing I can be disappointed over is the fact that we were nervous in the end. We should close this game way earlier."
Björkegren believes the Black Queens deserved a more convincing result and says the team's performances have steadily improved throughout the tournament.
Ghana finished second in Group C and will now face Malawi in the quarterfinals. Victory would not only send the Black Queens into the semifinals but also secure qualification for the 2027 FIFA Women's World Cup, marking Ghana's first appearance at the global tournament since 2007.
