Kevin Danso has outlined Austria’s growing belief ahead of the World Cup, insisting Ralf Rangnick’s side are ready to test themselves against the world’s best after nearly three decades away from the tournament.
Austria’s return ends a 28-year absence, with Danso acknowledging the significance of the moment for an entire footballing generation.
The Tottenham defender, who is of Ghanaian heritage, says the squad’s strength lies in its collective identity rather than individual stardom.
“We have talent, but above all, real unity and a strong collective mentality,” he said.
“Every player knows exactly what’s expected of him,” Danso said. “He gave us a strong identity and an ambitious mentality.”
“I like to defend going forward. I enjoy duels, but modern football demands composure and good decision-making.”
Austria’s ambitions, however, extend beyond simply competing in the group stage. Danso made clear the squad will not set limits on what they can achieve in North America.
“The first step is obviously to get out of our group, but we don’t want to set any limits for ourselves,” he said. “In a tournament like the World Cup, anything is possible.
“We respect every team, but we’re going there with the ambition to achieve something great for our country.”
