Jamie Leweling has been named in Germany’s squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup almost six years after turning down the chance to play for Ghana.
Germany coach Julian Nagelsmann included the attacker in his final squad for the tournament in North America, where the Germans will face Curacao, Cote d’Ivoire and Ecuador in Group E.
Leweling, who was born in Germany to a Ghanaian father and German mother, had the option of representing either country at international level.
In 2020, then-Ghana coach Charles Akonnor handed the young forward his first Black Stars call-up at the age of 19, but Leweling declined the invitation as he chose to continue his development within Germany’s youth national team system.
The decision eventually paid off for the Stuttgart attacker, who made his senior debut for Germany in 2024 and dramatically announced himself by scoring the winning goal against Netherlands in the UEFA Nations League.
Leweling’s inclusion in Germany’s World Cup squad represents another example of a player with Ghanaian roots choosing to represent a European nation at senior international level.
Nagelsmann’s squad also includes experienced names such as Joshua Kimmich, Manuel Neuer, Kai Havertz and Florian Wirtz.
Germany will begin their World Cup campaign against Curaçao in Houston on June 14 before facing Cote d’Ivoire in Toronto and Ecuador in New York, New Jersey.
