Otumfuo Osei Tutu II
THE DEEP love that the people in the Ashanti Region, especially Kumasi, have for Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, the Asantehene, once again came to bear on Wednesday, May 6, 2026.
The day was the famous and revered monarch’s 76th birthday and the enthusiastic people in the region celebrated him (Otumfuo) in their own ways to make the day memorable and grand.
Virtually, all the radio and television stations in the region celebrated the king by wishing him a joyful birthday on their networks, and they also allowed their teeming listeners to do same.
The Asantehene was also massively celebrated on all the social media platforms, including Facebook, WhatsApp, TikTok, Telegram and Instagram, by his people.
The excited people commended the Asantehene for his outstanding leadership style, which has transformed Asanteman and Ghana in general, and wished him a glorious 76th birthday.
They also fervently prayed to God to grant the Asantehene long life, sound health and wisdom, so that he would continue to lead the Asante Kingdom to the Promised Land.
Otumfuo’s Birthday Programme
Meanwhile, the Manhyia Palace, the official seat of the Asante Kingdom, has announced that there were no activities to celebrate Otumfuo’s 76th birthday in the palace on Wednesday.
According to the palace, “the Asantehene will attend church service, commemorating his 76th birthday on Sunday, May 10, 2026 at St. Cyprian’s Anglican Church at Fante New Town, Kumasi.”
The church service, which would be graced by dignitaries including government officials, chiefs, the clergy and businessmen, “will be followed by a Royal Lunch at the Palace.”
Otumfuo’s Background
Otumfuo Osei Tutu II was born on May 6, 1950, and he was named as Barima Kwaku Duah. He is the youngest of the five children of the late Asante Queen, Nana Afia Kobi Serwaa Ampem II.
He received his basic, secondary and tertiary education in Ghana and then proceeded to the United Kingdom (UK) and Canada, where he furthered his education and worked before returning home.
Otumfuo Osei Tutu II was enstooled as the 16th occupant of the revered Golden Stool of Asanteman on April 26, 1999 to succeed his deceased brother, Otumfuo Opoku Ware II.
